'Mental activity' does not constitute thinking! Now stop and reflect on this for a moment. Having thoughts flowing in and out of your mind without any control on them does not define 'thinking'.
Maintaining and thinking with purpose on a single idea demand concentration and strength/will. This is why so few engage in it. Thinking is hard.
