Are you doing more than you are paid for or are you only willing to do more once you get paid more? That promotion you want will be far away in the future if the last is your philosophy. Companies do pay attention to people who do more, who are providing a high level of service, who are outgrowing their current positions. And those people will be picked for opportunities and promotions first.
And don't worry if your company isn't the one who is seeing you, certainly another company will!
